Experience the winter landscapes of New Zealand's South Island on this seven-day, small-group photography tour led by professional landscape photographer Richard Hume.
Taking place from 5–11 July 2027, the tour explores the Mackenzie Country, Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park and the surrounding alpine landscapes. Winter brings snow-covered mountains, frosty mornings, dramatic light and the possibility of mist and atmospheric conditions around lakes, rivers and mountain valleys.
Starting in Christchurch and finishing in Queenstown, our photography takes us through the remote landscapes of the Ashburton Lakes and Hakatere Conservation Park, Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, the Tasman Valley and the Aoraki / Mount Cook region.
Photographic opportunities include:
Snow-covered mountains and alpine landscapes
Frosty mornings and reflections in lakes and rivers
The braided rivers and remote valleys of the Mackenzie Country
Glacial lakes and mountain scenery around Aoraki / Mount Cook
Long exposures, changing weather and dramatic winter light
The itinerary is designed around photography, with early starts and opportunities to work in the best morning and evening light. We remain flexible to respond to changing weather, road conditions and photographic opportunities.
With a maximum of six participants, the tour provides individual attention and practical tuition covering composition, camera techniques, filters, long exposures and working with natural light. Photographers of all experience levels are welcome.
Richard has more than 25 years of experience photographing New Zealand's landscapes and brings extensive local knowledge to each tour. The emphasis is on spending time at locations, exploring compositions and making the most of the conditions rather than rushing between viewpoints.
