- The Dolomites
Situated in northern Italy, the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites form some of the most spectacular landscape and mountain scenery in the World.
The Dolomites is home to diverse landscapes; from the mountain peaks which tower all around, to the impossibly clear turquoise lakes and the gentle alpine meadows. A UNESCO World Heritage landscape in the Italian Alps , it is, quite simply, stunning.
With its gentle green valleys, breathtaking mountain landscapes with towering limestone pinnacles, crystal clear turquoise blue lakes, and charming, tiny villages characterised by Tyrolean huts, the Dolomites is a place to indulge both your senses and your camera. Here you’ll be captivated by the sheer cliffs, vertical walls, craggy pinnacles, idyllic valleys, and alpine pastures that define this unique landscape.
The beautiful Alpe di Siusi is the largest mountain pasture plateau in the Dolomites, spanning an area of 56 square kilometres. It’s also Europe’s highest alpine meadow. Here you’ll find rolling meadows dotted with little wooden huts, pine trees and wildflowers. A backdrop of the razor sharp mountain peaks of the dramatic Sassolungo mountain range makes for some incredible images and all around are spectacular panoramic views to be found.
The three jagged limestone peaks of ‘Tre Cime’ are arguably one of the most iconic mountain views in the whole of Italy and a highlight of any trip to the Dolomites. The three peaks themselves are a marvel but this area also gives you insanely beautiful views of the more distant mountains as well. There are some mesmerising scenes to capture here and we’ll spend time exploring the trails and numerous viewpoints around the famous three peaks.
Each day, a glorious natural phenomenon; the “alpenglow”, occurs. With sunrise and sunset, the mountains glow in different tones of red, yellow, pink and orange; a glorious sight to behold. And let’s not forget the glorious turquoise lakes of which there are many including the incredibly picturesque Lago Federa. We’ll also be taking in a sunrise at Lake Misurina to capture reflections of the Tre Cime peaks in its sparkling waters.
This workshop will be co-led by myself, Sarah Howard, and pro photographer and Dolomites expert James Rushforth, author of the FotoVUE guide to the Dolomites. An internationally acclaimed photographer and author, James has been photographing in the Dolomites for the last fifteen years and knows it intimately. Together we will be taking you to explore the classic mountain views and rustic alpine villages as well as some hidden gems.
We will be staying in two different areas to minimise travelling and also to allow us to fully explore all that the region has to offer. Our time will be split between the stunningly situated Cortina, in the Ampezzo region and Santa Christina in the Val Gardena, South Tyrol. Both our accommodations are located in beautiful surroundings with good access to our chosen photo-locations.
