Workshop Description

Photograph The Frozen Foxes

This 6-night Iceland expedition is about building genuine expertise in Arctic photography rather than ticking off a species list, with every element structured around creating powerful images that capture both the animal and its extreme environment. You will learn to harness winter’s long golden light and dramatic shadows, document wild behaviour in sub-zero conditions, compose images where subject and environment tell a story together, keep your gear working when the weather turns fierce, and think in sequences rather than single frames.

The setting is Hornstrandir in the Westfjords, a wilderness where Arctic foxes have lived free from hunting pressure for decades and behave naturally around people, with no baiting or feeding, so every behaviour you capture is authentic. It is one of the best Arctic fox locations anywhere, with chocolate-brown blue morphs making up the bulk of the local population. There may also be striking white morphs, and foxes hunting ptarmigan along ridges, scavenging coastal drift and patrolling territories.

The lodge is often the only human presence on the peninsula, so there is no competition for locations, and overlapping territories bring several family groups through regularly. Spending several days in the field matters, because changeable weather means a poor morning never defines the trip and you can progress from simply capturing foxes to anticipating their patterns.

Accommodation is basic, there is no phone signal and temperatures typically range from -5°C to +5°C, occasionally dropping to -15°C. It suits photographers who prioritise authentic fox encounters over comfort and want expert guidance that pushes their creative and technical boundaries. Limited to 5 guests and welcoming all levels, you will return with diverse Arctic imagery in varied light, cold-climate competence, a deeper understanding of fox behaviour and ecology, proven post-production workflows and memories of complete wilderness immersion at Europe’s edge.

Additional Information

Truly Wild Foxes
Photograph Arctic foxes in Iceland’s remote Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, where they have lived free from hunting pressure for decades. They are never baited or fed, so every photograph you capture and every interaction is authentic.

A Private Wilderness
Stay four nights in a private lodge inside the reserve, often the only human presence on the peninsula, so there’s no competition for locations. A resident Icelandic chef prepares your meals, with packed lunches for sessions.
