Description:

In October and November 2026, Galapagos Safari Camp will be offering two small-group Photography Safaris in the Galapagos, led by Lucas Bustamante, one of the islands’ leading wildlife photographers whose work has been published by National Geographic. The islands provide exceptional opportunities to photograph behavior, form, and environment, both on land and underwater, with animals that are remarkably unconcerned by human presence. While specific sightings can never be guaranteed, species typically encountered include giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and Darwin’s finches. October and November fall within the cooler, drier season when mist often settles over the highlands, softening the light and creating atmospheric, luminous landscapes that are hauntingly beautiful.

Our Photography Safaris are designed for enthusiasts who want to experience the islands from the perspective of a professional wildlife photographer and take their work to the next level. Unlike strictly scheduled group tours, this land-based approach at Galapagos Safari Camp offers far more scope to adapt pace, allowing photographers greater freedom to linger, observe, and work a scene when conditions are right. Evenings are spent back at the Camp for relaxed photography workshops to review the day’s images and discuss technique. Set on the edge of the National Park with no fences, the Camp is home to many iconic species and offers wide views out to the Pacific Ocean, providing opportunities to work with atmosphere, color, and scale.

What will I learn?:

You will build your confidence as a wildlife photographer while developing a deeper understanding of Galapagos wildlife and behaviour. You will learn practical techniques you can apply long after the Safari ends, refine how you work with light and composition, and begin to identify your own photographic style. You will also learn how to photograph different Galapagos species from a professional photographer who has spent years observing and photographing them.

The aim is to help photographers move beyond postcard images and vacation snapshots, and towards creating truly exceptional photographs, images that capture an animal’s character, behaviour, and sense of place. Photographs to feel genuinely proud of, that transport you back to a moment in time, and continue to give you joy for years to come.

The Experience:
Join world-renowned wildlife photographer and conservation biologist Lucas Bustamante for a 6-day immersive photography safari in the heart of the Galapagos. Unlike traditional cruise-based tours, this land-based expedition offers photographers the rare luxury of time. By staying at the renowned Galapagos Safari Camp, we bypass the rigid schedules of boats, allowing you to linger at key sites, “work the scene,” and wait for the perfect light.

Why October & November:
These months represent the “hauntingly beautiful” side of the archipelago. The nutrient-rich Humboldt Current brings a surge of marine life, making for world-class snorkeling and underwater photography. On land, the garúa (mist) creates a soft, cinematic light reminiscent of Turner’s paintings—ideal for capturing the islands’ prehistoric landscapes and endemic species with a moody, atmospheric quality.

Instruction & Highlights:
Expert Mentorship: Learn from Lucas Bustamante, a native Ecuadorian with nearly 20 years of experience. His patient, behavior-led approach helps you anticipate the moment rather than just reacting to it.

Diverse Ecosystems:
From lush highlands where giant tortoises roam freely through the camp, to arid coastlines and uninhabited islands.

Dual-Element Photography:
Rare opportunities to shoot both terrestrial wildlife (Blue-footed Boobies, Marine Iguanas, Darwin’s Finches) and marine life (Sea Lions, Turtles, and Rays).

Evening Workshops:
Relaxed sessions at the camp to review images, refine editing workflows, and discuss visual storytelling.

Night Photography:
With 55 hectares of private land and zero light pollution, experiment with the star-filled skies and nocturnal highland wildlife.

The Itinerary & Logistics:
The 6-night/5-day itinerary is a curated blend of Santa Cruz Island’s most biodiverse spots and boat excursions to protected, uninhabited islands. Our land-based approach provides the flexibility that serious photographers require, allowing us to adapt our pace to the wildlife and the weather.

Included:
– Luxury tented accommodation at Galapagos Safari Camp.
– All meals, internal transfers, and National Park guiding.
– Daily photography tuition and evening workshops with Lucas Bustamante.
– Boat excursions to uninhabited islands.

About Your Guide:
Lucas Bustamante is a Galapagos-based wildlife photographer and author whose work has been featured by National Geographic, BBC Wildlife, and the Smithsonian. A conservationist at heart, Lucas has helped describe multiple species new to science. He brings a deep biological understanding to his photography, helping guests “read” animal behavior to capture stronger, more deliberate images.
