- Acadia National Park, Maine
Acadia National Park is a crown jewel of the north Atlantic coast and New England. The glacially-carved granite mountains and shoreline are distinctive and lie on the boundary between eastern deciduous and northern boreal forests and ecotypes. Oaks, maples, and beeches dominate the eastern deciduous while coniferous white pine, eastern hemlock, and northern white cedar are found in the northern boreal to the north and at higher elevations within the park. Four Native American tribes have called the region of Maine home for centuries, the Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot—collectively known as the Wabanaki, or “People of the Dawnland.” Carriage roads throughout the park, built in the early 1900s, allow for easy access and are part of the history of colonization in this area from the first recorded European visit on Mount Desert Island in 1604.
We will wander at a Photographer’s Pace, allowing you time to get to know each location. This means we’ll visit only 1 – 3 locations per day. This is not a whirlwind tour. You’ll have time to look and see and ponder, to let the landscape show you what it wants you to photograph. Expect to have up to 2 hours or more per location to find the smallest thing and the largest thing to photograph, to make long exposures, to experiment, to hone your personal vision. Some locations involve some hiking, up to perhaps 3 miles round trip on easy to moderate tracks. This is a photography exploration, also, and while post-processing is an important part of the photography process, I won’t be spending specific time on that but will be happy to assist where needed. Expect early mornings, long days, with breaks, into the evening. We’ll explore under all but extreme weather conditions.
You’ll receive assistance with composition, exposure, reading the light, improving your visual and sensory awareness, long exposure, perhaps some astrophotography (weather permitting)
